“They’re reliable” they said.
Rent is due. Guess I shouldn’t sell the Mustang just yet.

Uh oh....bottom end? Top end? I don’t know enough to be able to tell... :/
![]() 07/31/2017 at 19:58 |

Well the problem is obvious. The hood is on backwards.

That ain’t no Cobra, you’ve got a rattler in there!
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:01 |

It’s just reverting to its pre-revolution heritage.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:07 |

You can rebuild that in a couple of hours.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:14 |

Oof. I hate to say it, but you’re probably best off parking it for a couple weeks/months/[calculate based on your income here] until you can pull that out and freshen things up a bit. The good news (if there is any here) is that parts are going to be cheap and there are probably 7-8million videos and guides and everything else should you run into any difficulty.

^ That, expensive cars to maintain are only fun when you can afford to maintain them. That’s the value of having a daily driver and an unreliable car.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:27 |

reliable isnt the same as indestructible.
that said, it will still probably run for another year or so
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:27 |
|
Right yes, reliable cars!
(Quietly daily-drives away in a 180k mile rotary past a Chevelle on blocks and a Police Crown Vic with more rust than steel)
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:30 |

I don’t know if they’re necessarily reliable, but when they do break you can fix them with a couple wrenches or buy a running one on CL for a few hundred bucks.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:45 |

Rod knock? What kind of mileage does that engine have?
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:50 |

A Chevy will run like crap longer than most cars run like new
![]() 07/31/2017 at 20:56 |

“they” just want to seek you suffer
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:02 |

It’s still running, isn’t it?
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:18 |

Many of them run like crap straight from the factory.

Story of my life.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:19 |

Nobody knows. It’s a 45 year old or more engine so probably “a lot”
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:22 |

There’s a Vortec on CL for $350 and I’d do many, many things to have it.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:22 |
|
It’s not even that it runs bad, it just makes noises that may indicate imminent catastrophic failure.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:23 |
|
Yeah... I’m gonna drive the Mustang to work tomorrow and see if I’m super, super lucky and the noise is just a flex plate bolt backing out.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:25 |
|
Possibly. $30 on ebay for a set of rod and main bearings. Neato.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:26 |

have you gotten a chance to check any of the obvious stuff yet? stuff like
loose torque converter bolts....
loose front of engine pulley bolts....
loose fuel pump bolts.......
timing might be way out........(spark knock)......
rocker arms out of adjustment.......( where i would put my money).....
cracked flywheel.......
other stuff than a broken piston skirt, or rod on its way out..........
when i am trying to narrow down locations of weird noises i use the small end of a two piece fishing pole as a listening stick, and press the fat end against my ear, and put enough pressure to bow the rod........

It never ends.

I bought a TH350 for my truck from a friend and he threw in a free, running SBC350. I’m hording it like gold.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:27 |

what the shit
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:28 |

My step brother did a bottom end rebuild on his chevy pickup (350), on a Saturday morning. You don’t even have to pull the engin if you can get the oil pan off.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:30 |
|
“will run badly, longer than most cars will run at all”.....
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:35 |
|
The Jag has a super beefy subframe in the way of doing that. Engine’s gotta be relieved out the top.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 21:41 |
|
Yeah threw in an engine stand, a flex plate, a brand new Hughs TC and some other goodies as well. The transmission was originally $1,200 but I got it for $750. He was in the middle of a nightmare project and just wanted to be done with everything as he was moving. Only problem is I need to get a longer driveshaft as the new tranny has a short tailshaft.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 22:12 |

Wild ass guess is a loose rocker. And if so, I’m hoping it’s because somebody didn’t set the preload right and not because you wiped a lobe. Or something valvetrain related.
Good luck dude.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 22:29 |
|
Looks like it’s rebuild time. On the plus it’s a SBC so nothing is too bad. on the minus you probably need machinework and that is expensive no matter what block it is.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 23:04 |
|
the wiped lobes started getting bad here a few years back, when they started changing the oil formulas, and pulled out most of the zddp additives....... wonder if jake is running “premium” full modern synthetic, without the anti wear additives ..........
![]() 08/01/2017 at 08:25 |

sounds healthy to me
:P
![]() 08/01/2017 at 09:41 |
|
Yeah, it fucked me over. Back in the mid 2000s they started changing formulas and it wasn’t as widely known. I gave away a stack of cams to a sculptor. Not much else to do with them.
![]() 08/01/2017 at 11:58 |
|
i STILL have a stack of camshafts too. i’m just scared to use them on anything with any kind of spring pressure. i decided then abouts that the stuff i was putting together for myself was going to have to be roller to be able to reliably keep alive. big difference investment wise...... every once in a long while, when i just need a “runner” i’ll use one of the flat tappets, but i have a hard time setting one up for anybody else. they usually wont keep up with the oil requirements....
![]() 08/01/2017 at 12:09 |
|
if its a 2 bolt main 350, that wouldn’t surprise me. Time for L31 vortec and 4l60e
![]() 08/01/2017 at 12:10 |
|
I was really on the fence on my last engine. Wanted to go hyd roller but the retrofit lifters were such a big chunk of coin.
![]() 08/01/2017 at 12:18 |
|
There’s a Vortec on CL for $350 and I badly want it but I don’t even have enough for rent right now.
![]() 08/01/2017 at 12:24 |
|
yeah, they are real proud of them when you go to buy them..... i usually weigh it out over how long do i plan to keep the engine..... spend the money once and dont look back.....
but it IS a big difference. $120 cam kit with flat tappet lifters, vs around $1300-ish roller(by the time you are done buying buttons, and fuel rods, and bronze gears) and thats just for a dirt common sbc, much less anything hard to come by......
